Apex is a town located in Wake County, North Carolina. At its southern boundary, Apex covers the town of Friendship. The downtown area was declared a historic district in 1994, and the Apex railway station, which was erected in 1867, is a Wake County landmark. The town's name comes from the fact that the station is located at the highest point of the old Chatham Railroad. "The Peak of Good Living" is the town slogan.
The picturesque hamlet of Apex, which celebrates its turn-of-the-century railroad legacy, has more than 60 commercial and residential properties ranging from 1870 to 1940. Take a walk around the charming, pedestrian-friendly downtown district to view colorfully renovated buildings that are home to vibrant businesses.
Downtown Apex is buzzing with antique shops and specialized boutiques, such as the locally beloved Rusty Bucket, as well as award-winning eateries like Anna's Pizzeria. History aficionados may take a tour of historic Hughes and Salem Streets, which are part of a National Register of Historic Places section that includes the circa-1914 Apex Union Depot, a landmark of late Victorian architecture.
Apex became an incorporated town in 1873. The town was called from its position as the highest point on a section of the Chatham Railroad, which eventually runs between Richmond, Virginia, and Jacksonville, Florida, according to the North Carolina History Project. The name relates to the highest point between Raleigh and the Deep River, according to a 1905 USGS book on place names.
Despite many disastrous fires, including one on June 12, 1911, that destroyed much of the central commercial sector, Apex expanded slowly over the next several decades and became one of the best small towns to live in North Carolina.
Apex first appeared on Best Place to Live lists in 2007, and it slowly ascended the rankings until it reached #1 in 2015. This fueled population increase as well. Apex is now North Carolina's eighteenth most populous city.
